If you own a Mac, you automatically own GarageBand, powerful software for creating most types of music you can imagine. Unlike traditional DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software, it's easy to use and you don't even need to know how to play an instrument to use it.

If you're a budding beatmaker but aren't sure which software to start with, GarageBand is a great way to start making beats on your Mac. As you grow out of GarageBand, you can always upgrade to more powerful software later.

Just click on the icon in GarageBand, open the “File” menu, then choose “New” from the drop-down menu that appears. Select the Tempo You Want.

Get started quickly with beats with templates

When you start a new project, the software gives you a few options to get started. You can create a blank project, but there are faster ways to get started with the templates included with GarageBand.

When starting a new project instead of selecting Empty project, click Project templates on the left. If you want to make a hip hop or trap beat in GarageBand, this is it Hip hop or Electronically Templates help you get started quickly.

Use GarageBand's built-in drums

No matter what type of beat you want to make in GarageBand, drums are a key element. Some people prefer to start with a melody or bass line, but when you start with drums you can build your melodic elements around the main beat.

One of the easiest ways is to use GarageBand's built-in drummers. We've used GarageBand's drum kit before so we don't go into too much detail here. We are now focusing on which drummer to choose.

Dez is the trap drummer and will automatically load once you start that Hip hop Template. If you started with an empty project, choose drummer as the track type in the dialog box that asks you what to start with.

On an empty track, Kyle (the pop rock drummer) is the default, but this isn't great for making beats. Instead, choose from the styles on the left side of the window Hip hop and select a drummer here. If you're making a trap beat, Dez is a good choice, although Anton (Modern Hip Hop) and Maurice (Boom Bap) will work fine too.

Below the drum area you can see the Sounds Section. Here you can choose from a variety of drum machines, including emulations of classics like the Roland TR-808 and TR-909.

Build a beat with loops

Much of early hip hop was built with samples from other songs, and many modern hip hop use these too. Apple has a similar function in GarageBand in the form of loops.

To access these loops, click Loop browser Icon in the upper-right corner of the GarageBand window. Well over 10,000 loops are available here, including everything from drums and percussion to keys, strings and other instruments.

You can narrow down the available loops by clicking instrument or genre Captions at the top of this section. You can combine these, e.g. B. Select Hip hop as a genre and Synths as an instrument.

When creating rap beats, look at drum breaks and instruments like organs, keys, and bass. For example, you can use the search function to search for 808 loops.

Loops will play automatically when you select them. When you find one that you like, click and drag it to the Workplace in the middle of the screen. You can copy and paste them with Cmd + C. and Cmd + V. to repeat it.

If you double click on a loop, it will be displayed editor Popup at the bottom of the screen. Here you can trim the start and end points, transpose the pitch, or even reverse the playback of the loop.

Loops are easy to use and you can just make a beat with them and the built-in drummers. But what if you have a sound in your head? Whether it's a drum part or a melody, you may need to create a part to get it right.

This is where the GarageBand software instruments come in handy. Just right click under the other titles on the left and select New software instrument track or create one with the Option + Cmd + S. Keyboard shortcuts.

Click to select the instrument View> Show Library or press Y.. Here you can choose from drum kits, keyboards, synthesizers and more. For example, choose for a powerful bass line Synthesizer> Bass> 808 Bass.

When you're ready to record your part, you can either use a MIDI controller, if you have one, or play notes on your computer keyboard. To do this, press Cmd + K. pull that up Musical typing Window.

Hit the red one recording Key at the top of the screen or press R. to start recording. The app counts four beats and then starts recording. You will hear the other roles play as you play your role.

If you'd rather draw your part, right-click in the work area next to the trace you just created, then select Create a MIDI Region. You can resize it by moving your mouse over the right side of the region until the cursor changes, then clicking and dragging the end of the region.

When you have created the region, double-click it or press E. to open the editor. Here you can see a grid with a piano keyboard on the left. You can Command + click In this view you can take notes and then use the mouse to resize and move them.

You can even use a combination of the Musical Typing Keyboard and the MIDI Editor to perfect a part. Play the role live, then edit it until it's perfect in the editor view.

Arrange your final beat

Once you've created all of your parts, it's time to arrange them to add variety to your beat. For most beats, you should start with a few melodic elements and then introduce drums and bass.

By copying and pasting, you can arrange sections so that they build up to the chorus, and then fall out for verse. In general, you should set the second verse so that it doesn't sound like the first verse.

You can also cut out parts by dragging the Playhead In a section, select the region you want to edit, then press Cmd + T.. This divides the region. Move the playhead and try again, then select the section in the center and press Clear remove it.

When sections drop out and come back in, other sections are highlighted, giving your beats a more organic feel.

Go beyond GarageBand

We mentioned earlier that we are moving to other software. You may be happy to stay in GarageBand, but if you're looking for more powerful features, Apple's Logic Pro is a great next step.

Not only does Logic have a very similar interface to GarageBand, it can even import GarageBand projects so you don't have to leave your old beats behind. Of course, Logic is nowhere near the only DAW available for macOS, but it's a powerful and relatively affordable option.
