Large organizations may not want to deploy the ArcGIS for Office add-in to each computer on their network individually. To support large-scale deployments, ArcGIS for Office includes options for installation from the command line. Automated deployment solutions can be built using these command line options. For example, if your organization wants to use ArcGIS Enterprise as the default ArcGIS connection, you can set the CONNECT_TO parameter to your ArcGIS Enterprise portal URL. If you use this setting when you deploy across the organization, all computers will use your ArcGIS Enterprise portal.

Install required software

Before you begin, ensure that the required software is properly installed and configured on each system.

ArcGIS for Office requires the following software:

Install ArcGIS for Office

To install ArcGIS for Office from the command line, do the following:

  1. Download the ArcGIS for Office add-in.
  2. Open an administrator command line terminal.

For Windows 10, press the Windows key on the keyboard and type run. In the Run window, click Browse. Navigate to the location where you saved the downloaded executable, select the file, and click Open. In the Run window, click OK.

  3. Browse to the folder containing the ArcGIS for Office executable file and type the following command:
    Note:

The code block shown below is broken onto separate lines for clarity only. Type the code in your command window on a single line or copy and paste the following line into your command window: ArcGISforOffice_2021.1.exe /s /msicl 'ACCEPTEULA=yes' /msicl 'ENABLEUSERFEEDBACK=true' /msicl 'CONNECT_TO=https://www.arcgis.com' 'ARCGISMAPSWEBROOT=https://la.arcgis.com'/msicl 'CHECKFORSOFTWAREUPGRADE=true'.

  4. Press Enter.

The command shown above includes all the available configuration options. Some parameters are mandatory; others are optional. If you don't want to change an optional default configuration, you don't need to include it in your command.

Available options are the following:

  • ACCEPTEULA—This parameter is mandatory. The value of this parameter must be set to yes in order to install the software. A value of yes indicates acceptance of the End User License Agreement.
  • ENABLEUSERFEEDBACK—If this parameter is set to true, the Esri User Experience Improvement program is enabled, allowing the program to send anonymous information to Esri. By default, this parameter is set to true; to disable user feedback, set this parameter to false.
  • CONNECT_TO—This parameter is mandatory. The value for this parameter is either https://www.arcgis.com, the URL to your ArcGIS Online organization, or the URL to your ArcGIS Enterprise portal instance. Change this value to point to the appropriate location.
  • ARCGISMAPSWEBROOT—This parameter specifies the location of the JavaScript files used by ArcGIS for Office. By default, this is set to https://la.arcgis.com when the ArcGIS connection is either https://www.arcgis.com or the URL of your ArcGIS Online organization.
    • If your organization uses a supported version of ArcGIS Enterprise, the default value is the location on the portal machine where required JavaScript files are written during installation of the ArcGIS for Office resources.
    • If your ArcGIS Enterprise portal is behind a firewall or in a disconnected environment, you may need to host the files on a server on your local network. Follow the instructions to set up resource files for ArcGIS Enterprise and use this parameter to point to the files on your local network.
    • If your ArcGIS connection is https://www.arcgis.com or the URL to your ArcGIS Online organization, it is recommended that you use the default parameter value (do not specify this parameter in your command).
  • CHECKFORSOFTWAREUPGRADE—If this parameter is set to true, the installer verifies whether a new version of ArcGIS for Office is available. If you don't want to check for upgrades, set this value to false. The default value is true.
